MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Avery Braxton joined the ABC24 team after working as the Weekend Sports Anchor at 13WMAZ in Macon, GA.
Avery initially joined WMAZ on the News side in 2018. After a year handling general news assignments including politics, crime and daily affairs, as well as assisting the sports team during their popular weekly Football Friday Night show, he transitioned to sports in August 2019. On the sports team, Avery covered University of Georgia and Mercer University athletics, high school state championships and the 2019 SEC College Football Championship game. He was named the 2021 Sportscaster of the Year for mid and small sized markets by the Georgia Association of Broadcasters.
Avery is a graduate of Mercer University’s Center for Collaborative Journalism. He interned in Atlanta twice – once for the Next Generation Radio Project and again for WSB-TV under their investigative team and in New York as a Knight CUNYJ Fellow and intern for NY1.
Avery’s been a sideline reporter, play-by-play, and color analyst covering his Mercer Bears on ESPN3 and was an ESPNU Campus Connection Reporter.
Avery is originally from Baltimore, Maryland, but grew up in Peachtree City, Georgia. He loves all things Atlanta sports and is also a big Baltimore Ravens fan.
Avery is a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. In his spare time, he enjoys participating in community events with his fraternity brothers, playing video games and playing basketball.
