MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Desmond Nugent is a multi-skilled journalist at ABC24, joining the team in March, 2024.
With an emphasis on being a person for the people, Desmond hopes Memphians will reach out with unique stories in their communities, ideas or even a warm welcome.
Desmond is new to Tennessee but has worked mostly throughout the Midwest in his 15-year career as a journalist.
Before calling the Volunteer State home, Desmond started his journalism career as a photojournalist in Sherman, Texas. He’s also worked in Kansas and Oklahoma.
In addition to his experience, Desmond is an award-winning journalist—an Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters Award Winner for best spot news for the Betty Shelby Trial Verdict and The Duck Boat Tragedy in Branson, Missouri. He is also a regional Edward R. Murrow Award Winner for exposing corruption at the Tulsa, Oklahoma, County Jail.
While in Arkansas, one of the biggest stories of his career happened during COVID-19, covering a mother and daughter who worked as nurses at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020. This story received national and international attention from multiple outlets.
As a Kansas City, Missouri, native, he is an avid sports fan, Desmond has also covered the Wichita State Shockers magical Final Four run, the 2011 NBA Finals and World Series, Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs training camp.
When Desmond isn’t looking for stories or watching the news, he loves spending time with his fiancée, mentoring local elementary school students, writing music, reading books and serving his community through his fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. He is also a member of the National Association of Black Journalists. Desmond hopes to be a change-maker here at ABC24 with one handshake and smile at a time.
