Crews prep hundreds of fireworks for Germantown's 'Fireworks Extravaganza'

Ahead of the 4th of July celebration, crews in Germantown are getting ready for the show.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — As Memphis gets ready to celebrate Independence Day, Germantown is having its “Fireworks Extravaganza” celebrating the nation’s birthday with live entertainment, crafts, refreshments, and a fireworks display.

Crews say it takes them about 10 hours to set up the show which is estimated to be about 20 minutes.

“We’ve just been here since early in the morning, getting close to wrapping up, and were hoping to put on a good show tonight," Pyro Shows crew leader Michael O’Neal said.

Early on Thursday, crews prepped hundreds of racks of fireworks for the 20-minute show. This comes after last year Germantown’s Fireworks show was cancelled due to the weather.

"We have a typical five-inch shell, and you can see we have hundreds of these in this setup and what this is essentially is a power charge to the bottom which will propel this spherical firework hundreds of feet in the air," O'Neal said, describing how the fireworks operate. "We see here at the top here is actually the tail, this is actually the tail, this will emit a shower of sparks as it's going upward. This is the fuse that we electronically ignite.”

While Memphians are out celebrating the 4th of July several roads will be closed to ensure safety during this event in Germantown including Exteter rd. from Farmington Blvdto Neshoba Rd.
