'We wanted to do more' | Family's 21-mile journey across Memphis celebrates daughter, raises awareness for World Down Syndrome Day

The annual tradition has raised more than $97,000 for the Down Syndrome Association of Memphis and the Mid-South.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — March 21st is a day that means a lot to Memphian Josh Greer. Every year he treks 21 miles across the Bluff City for a single purpose, his daughter.

"We wanted to do more," said Greer.

March 21st is World Down Syndrome Day, a time to celebrate and bring awareness to those who are born with three copies of their 21st chromosome, the conditions for Down Syndrome.

Eight years ago, Greer and his wife became parents to Marley, whose smile could light up a room. Marley was born with Down Syndrome, and every day the Greer work to give Marley her best life, which eventually led them to create ‘Walkin’ In Memphis' (WIM).

"It's just a way to highlight the city but also let individuals with Down Syndrome across the area know that the community loves them and supports them," said Greer.

Every year on the 21st, Greer walks 21 miles to 21 Memphis attractions, with the goal to raise $21,000 for the Down Syndrome Association of Memphis and the Mid-South (DSAM).

"Especially programs and services, enrichment and expansion,” said Greer, “But it really was just a resource that was there for me and my wife when we had our daughter eight years ago. Two days out of the hospital it was a 'Congratulations, here's a welcome basket. We're here for you whenever you need us.'"

According to WIM’s website, the annual tradition has raised more than $97,000 for DSAM. Funds have gone towards a new learning center, pandemic support, and program and event expansion.

"It means a lot to our family to celebrate, obviously, our daughter, and all individuals with Down Syndrome and any disabilities really,” said Greer. “If you see anyone with Down Syndrome, just give them a hug, say hello, get to know them, and really that's the point of the whole day."

Greer’s 12-hour journey will come to an end around 6 p.m. Thursday at Beale Street Landing. The community can join him in celebrating World Down Syndrome Day with food, games and music from 6-10 p.m. All proceeds will go towards DSAM. You can also contribute using THIS LINK.
