New Memphis restaurants bucking trend of Bluff City closures

Citing rising costs, crime and other factors, dozens of Memphis staples shuttered their doors for good in 2024. Others are choosing to believe in a better Memphis

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Too often we hear about businesses and restaurants closing in the Bluff City, when there are others trying to create something new.

Citing rising costs, crime and market saturation, dozens of Memphis staples have shuttered their doors for good in 2024. However, there are some choosing to believe in a better Memphis.

Kellie Barksdale, a Mid-South native, has been looking for an opportunity like this for decades.

“Well, I know I’m a nervous wreck,” said Barksdale, owner/operator of Kellie’s Deli, newly opened at the corner of Tennessee and G.E. Patterson.

“I have never owned a business before, this is my first,” she said. “I have, however, worked in food for 40 years, the only job I’ve ever had is working in food for the most part.”

Sandwiches, soups.. and desserts all available seven days a week. It’s personal for her.

“I live in the area and it's very difficult to find the things that I want. So I made sure to include those things in the menu,” she said.

While plenty of restaurants in Memphis have faced tough times lately, she’s not alone.  Mahogany in Midtown has opened up Mahogany River Terrace, right alongside the Mississippi River.

“Its a very good experience, a very rare experience in fact. And I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes,” said Perrie Ware, sous chef.

Ware says he hopes that location can drive more traffic to the surrounding areas as part of a stronger overall economy in Memphis.

“This spot right here, it's not just a spot in Memphis, it’s a spot where tourists come. By getting a lot of attention, with this place and the amphitheater, You're able to get a lot more traction,” Ware said.

Whether it's barbecue, burgers or fine dining, the Bluff City still has a lot to offer, and there’s more to come.
