Mother of 2 looking for answers after food stamps cut off without warning

Angela Spriggs says she was supposed to receive her food stamps on Friday, July 12.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Long wait times, little to no communication and benefits denied without warning or notice are still impacting a South Memphis mother of two who depends on food stamps.

Angela Spriggs said she was supposed to receive her food stamps on Friday, July 12. But when she checked her balance, it was zero.

She said she received no warning or word from the Department of Human Services.

“I didn’t get a letter, I didn’t get a phone call on my appointment, and I didn’t get a letter saying I was terminated," Briggs claims.

She previously went months without food stamps, and nearly five months after having them reinstated, she is frustrated, wondering how she will feed her two boys.

Briggs lives in South Memphis, a part of the city with limited healthy and affordable food options. Now that her expected food stamps didn’t arrive, she’s fearful she will have to once again go months without any resolution.

“I’m trying to feed my kids, I’m trying to pay my bills. I don’t have transportation to go to the food pantry, and the food pantry [doesn’t] deliver...Get it together, get y’all some case workers that really care about their jobs and people," Spriggs said.

The Department of Human Services said they can't comment on a specific case. If you are having similar issues or have questions, contact DHS at 1-866-311-4287.
