MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Many are restaurant workers are out of work right now due the coronavirus outbreak. And many local business owners are trying to do what they can to ease the burden, while staying afloat.
One of those is Corky’s Ribs & BBQ. Corky’s said most layoffs from their restaurants involved front of house employees – such as hosts, servers, and bartenders – and some kitchen staff. Now they are working to move some of those employees to the Corky’s USDA food manufacturing facility.
“We know the secret to our success is our incredible family of employees. It has been so difficult to make the decision to lay off any of our employees, especially some of our long-term employees,” says Corky’s COO Jimmy Stovall in a news release.
Corky’s says it is also providing each laid off employee with a box of frozen food items each week for their families. The boxes will include Corky’s meat, as well as sides, apple sauce, and pudding.
“We want to do everything we can to ensure we get them back to work as soon as possible so they can get back to serving our loyal customers daily. Until then I want to make sure we help and provide them food for themselves and their family,” says Stovall.
Along with the boxes, Corky’s is giving gift certificates weekly to the workers so they can go to the drive-thru and don’t have to cook on a particular day.
“We are in the food business, and we will band together as a family and help them with their meals through these frozen food boxes and Corky’s gift certificates,” Stovall continues. “We may not be able to pay them during this temporary layoff, but we certainly can make sure they won’t have to worry about food.”
