MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Hino Motors Manufacturing (HMM) has announced it plans to close its plant in Marion, Arkansas, affecting 1,300 employees.
According to a notice on its website, the Board of Directors decided to “withdraw from the parts business at HMM Arkansas plant” during a meeting on May 31, 2024.
“We have concluded that recovering sustainable profitability is difficult, and thus have decided to withdraw from this business,” read the notice.
The company said the plant would close by the end of 2027.
As for what all this means for the more than 1,000 workers at the East Arkansas plant, the notice only said, “Hino will proceed with consideration and sincerity on employees’ treatment.”
“Our team is aware of the announced closure at Hino Motors Manufacturing in Marion and is working to find solutions to minimize the impact,” said Arkansas Secretary of Commerce Hugh McDonald. “We are working across our divisions at the Department of Commerce to provide resources and services to help the local community and affected workers.”
"While this marks an end of an era, we remain immensely grateful for their positive impact on the community," said a statement from Marion city officials on social media. "The City of Marion is committed to supporting the affected employees during this transition and working towards creating new opportunities for growth and development in our community."
