MEMPHIS, Tenn. — There’s a new area code coming to North Mississippi. The new area code 471 will not replace 662 but will exist alongside it.

The Mississippi Public Service Commission said the new area code is needed because the numbering for 662 is expected to be exhausted by the third quarter of 2026.

The new area code will cover the same region as the current 662 number. That’s the Northern District with DeSoto, Lafayette, and Lee counties, and parts of the Central District with Holmes, Sunflower, and Yazoo counties.

Here’s what residents need to know:

  • If you have a 662-area code now, you won’t see a change. But if you request a new line, it could be assigned the new area code once it is active.
  • Everyone should continue to use 10-digit dialing for local calls (area code + seven-digit phone number).
  • The new area code is expected to begin use in late 2025 or early 2026. You do not need to make any changes currently.
