The sales tax holiday is coming to the Mid-South in time for back-to-school shopping

During the holiday, residents of Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee will be able to shop for clothes, computers and school supplies tax free.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The traditional tax sales holiday is coming to the Mid-South during which school supplies, clothing and computers will be available for purchase tax-free.

There will be some exceptions, mostly based on the cost of individual products, and the holiday will take place at different times across the three states.

According to the Tennessee Department of Revenue, items sold online are also eligible, and all stores and retailers are required to participate.

Mississippi

Mississippians will be the first to enjoy the tax-free weekend, which starts on Friday July 12, 2024 and ends on Sunday, July 14, 2024 at midnight.

Tennessee 

In Tennessee the sale tax holiday will start at on Friday, July 26 at 2024 and end that Sunday, on July 28, 2024. Out of all three states, Tennessee will be the state with the longest holiday, with it lasting all three weekend days.

Arkansas

Arkansas will be the last state of the area to enjoy the cut, but consumers in the state will also have one weekend to enjoy the tax-free supplies.

The 2024 sales tax holiday will start on Saturday, August 3, and end the following day on Sunday, August 4, 2024.

What is tax-free?

  • All clothing (including shoes) that cost less than $100 per individual item
  • All school supplies, as long as they costs less than $100 each
  • Computers for personal use that cost less than $1,500, including laptops and tablets.

What is not tax free?

  • Jewelry, handbags or sports and recreational equipment
  • Clothes and school supplies that cost more than $100 each
  • Storage media like flash drives and compact discs, individually purchased software, printer supplies and household appliances
  • Items sold together that cost more than $100 together cannot be split to be under that $100 threshold.
  • In Mississippi, the rental of clothes will not be tax free.
