How to winterize your car ahead of major temperature drops

It’s best to winterize your car right before the change of seasons – otherwise, you risk the chance of getting stuck in the cold.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — It’s that cheery time of year again and what does that mean besides presents? Making sure your car is prepped for the dropping temperatures.

It’s best to winterize your car right before the change of seasons – otherwise, you risk the chance of getting stuck in the cold.

You might have heard it before – but here’s your reminder.

"The fluids need to be checked over, check your bulbs, your headlight bulbs, your taillights,” said Dave Whitt with the Meineke Car Care Center.

“Especially battery, because when the cold season changes, the battery tends to go out," he said. "Or else you’ll be out there stuck in the bad elements."

Also on the list, install those winter wipers, service your vehicle regularly and maintain proper tire pressure.

“Also check your tires, make sure you got good tire pressure on it with the change of the season your tire pressure does change," he said.

With several days of rain, Memphis has seen potholes around the city.

“This morning, we had one come in that needed two tires. She hit a pothole, lost control, hit a curb and busted two tires.”

The possible fallout on your car can be detrimental.

“A pothole can take out your car, it can mess up the alignment, the struts, and more parts on your suspension," said Whitt. "We just need to get the potholes fixed and maybe we can keep the cars on the road.

Car shops like Whitt’s share that it’s a free check to make sure your car is up for winter. The car check usually takes 10-15 minutes.
