Why the Shelby County Assessor of Property says your property taxes could soon go up

The 2025 countywide reappraisal is coming up, the first reappraisal since 2021.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County Assessor of Property Melvin Burgess said Monday that residents could see a “substantial increase” in their property taxes.

The 2025 countywide reappraisal is coming up, the first reappraisal since 2021.

In a news release, Burgess said recent data shows property values increasing, which could, in turn, mean a “significant increase in tax assessments” for homeowners.

The property assessor’s office said Burgess will hold a series of public meetings to explain the process and offer guidance for homeowners.

“We recognize that property reappraisal can be a complicated and bewildering process,” said Burgess. “Our goal is to ensure that all properties are appraised equitably and accurately, and we are dedicated to fostering transparency and open communication throughout this process.”

A timeline for the meetings has not yet been released.
