OSCEOLA, Ark. — A new electrical steel line opened in a small East Arkansas town Thursday, which is part of what the operator said could bring billions of dollars in economic impact over the next few years.

U.S. Steel cut the ribbon Thursday on their new non-grain oriented (NGO) electrical steel line at its Big River Steel facility in Osceola, Arkansas.

The steel manufacturer said the new line at their Mississippi River facility has the capacity to make more tons of NGO electrical steel per year in the U.S. than any other domestic steelmaker, all while reducing carbon emissions 70-80% compared to typical steel processes.

The plant employs more than 800 workers, and U.S. Steel said their new facility under construction, Big River 2, is expected to have $5.2 billion in direct economic impact to the region over the next four years.

“Congratulations to U. S. Steel for opening their newest steel line at Osceola’s Big River Steel facility. As this project shows, when business, government, and communities work together, anything is possible,” said Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

Following the full acquisition of Big River Steel in 2021, U. S. Steel commenced construction of the NGO line in October 2022. The $450 million project was completed on time and on budget.
