Alpha Phi Alpha Memphis-area alumni host first joint Founder's Day event

The fraternity is celebrating 117 years of community service and brotherhood.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Alpha Delta Lambda and Sigma Rho Lambda alumni chapters will observe their commitment of service to the local community in a joint program on Dec. 3 at Memphis' Metropolitan Baptist Church at 3 p.m.

Each year since 1906, members of the oldest Greek letter fraternity created for African American men, Alpha Phi Alpha, come together on or around Dec. 4 to recognize the organization's founding. For 117 years, chapters of the organization have offered a variety of programs to help advance the community.

Young people have been encouraged to finish high school and apply to college, make responsible decisions and learn leadership skills through Alpha Phi Alpha's program organized around the Memphis area. Members of the fraternity have made sure warm meals get into the hands of people who need them most and volunteered when a helping hand was needed in schools and neighborhoods.

Presidents of both chapters spoke more about Alpha Phi Alpha's programs and invited the public out in observance of their 117th Founder's Day on ABC24 and CW30.
