Looking for something to do now that we're in October? | Check out ABC24's Fall Break Guide

Fall break starts next week for Memphis, Desoto Co. and West Memphis schools, but there is still plenty to do to enjoy the Bluff City on the cheap.

MEMPHIS, Tenn — If you are like most families in the Mid-South, Fall Break is on the horizon. The mini-vacation begins next week for families in Memphis, Desoto Co. and West Memphis Schools.

If you want to find something to do, now is the perfect time to explore the Bluff City with ABC24's Fall Break Guide.

A Personalized Haunted Tour

If you want to take a ride on the spooky side, there are a long list of spectral sensations you can visit across Memphis. According to I Love Memphis, these locations include:

  • Earnestine & Hazel's
  • Chickasaw Heritage Park
  • The Sterick Building
  • The Marine Residence
  • The Orpheum Theater

Pumpkin Patches

A quintessential part of the fall has always been the orange gourd, the treats they make and the jack-o-lantern's they become.

There is no shortage of local places you can find your pumpkins, but if you want to make a difference, you may want to head on over to the Second Baptist Church Pumpkin Patch. Nestled in the heart of East Memphis, the 20-year-tradition has been a place of peace for many people in the fall. Pumpkins range in prices, but you can find small ones for just $1. The patch features free games for kids to enjoy, free photo-ops, a free slice of pumpkin bread, and plenty of food and decorations for sale that help services at the church.

“We have families that come, they came as children and now they’re bringing their children," said Daniel Johnson, Second Baptist Church associate pastor. "And so all the funds that we raise go to support our youth mission trips and other activities that we have.”

Sales last throughout the end of October, and credit cards are accepted.

Mid-South Staples

There are several events the Mid-South has come to know and love during October.

Memphis Zoo Boo

The Memphis Zoo Boo will debut earlier this year than ever before on Oct. 4. On select nights from 6:00 p.m. to  9:30 p.m., families are encouraged to dress up in their best outfits and trick or treat across the zoo. Thanks to a partnership with Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, prehistoric friends will be present all throughout the area. Activities include Dino Minigolf, an interactive Mad Scientist Lab, and a Dino After Dark experience. Tickets are available online for $15 for members and $19 for non-members.

Mid-South Maze

The Mid-South Maze makes it's return to the Agricenter, and a haunted version of the tradition will start Oct. 5 and happen every Friday and Saturday night, those tickets are $20. Non-haunted tickets are $8 per child and $12 per adult. Wednesday nights feature an added bonus for ticket holders, including bonfires and hayrides.

Orion Free Concert Series

If you want to enjoy a free musical evening, the weekends at the Overton Park Shell are for you. The Orion Free Concert Series kicks off at 7 p.m. every Friday and Saturday, and features local and national talent. People are welcome to bring their own blankets and food, but extra food will be sold on site. A full list of artists performing can be found online.
