Family Safety Center holds domestic violence workshop with city leaders in effort to combat the problem

The Family Safety Center said it served nearly 6,000 survivors of intimate partner violence in 2022.

MEMPHIS, Tenn — The Family Safety Center is partnering with the City of Memphis to raise awareness of domestic violence and help survivors.

They held a workshop Thursday at the Benjamin Hooks Central Library, bringing together a group of agencies involved in domestic violence prevention in order to discuss ways to combat the problem in the Greater Memphis area.

Law enforcement and attorneys were on hand to discuss their roles in DV cases. Survivors were able to discuss challenges and ways to move forward from the crime, which impacts thousands.

The Family Safety Center said it served nearly 6,000 survivors of intimate partner violence in 2022. The group said according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD) and Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), there were 37 homicides related to domestic violence in 2022 and 30 in 2021.

The center said for Memphis Police and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, there was a 6.8% increase in all DV cases from 2021 to 2022 – from 14,800 to 15,803.
