MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Some homeowners in Shelby County are focused on what's next after lightning struck their homes during recent storms that have left a considerable amount of damage across the county.
A Shelby County Fire Department official confirmed that homes struck by lightning were hit within the same hour.
One of the homes is located near Whitten Road and Mullins Stations Road in Memphis.
Guye Winfield, who lives next door, called 911 after someone knocked on his door Monday at 1:30 am. Winfield said nearly a dozen fire trucks showed up to the scene.
"I sat here until 4:30 this morning, they never came out with a body bag," Winfield said.
The amber from the flames were close to his house but it never damaged his home, according to Winfield.
"The house is on fire. The back end of the house was engulfed in flames," he said. "I said well I'm glad it happened there and not here because I would've slept through that."
A fire official said 30 minutes away, near Millington, lightning struck another home. A family who lives nearby told ABC24 they are seeing the result of what they heard from the overnight storms.
Matt Weston said on Monday, he found out the house behind where he lives was struck by lightning.
"[I] heard what I thought was a big gust of wind, next thing you know fire trucks are rolling down the road and they just ended up right over here," Weston said.
Weston said he's not a fan of storms and the weather woke him out of bed.
"Yeah, I saw it. I knew it was close, but I didn't know it was that closes," he said.
An official with Shelby County Fire Department said they responded to both homes that were struck by lightning.
SCFD officials told ABC24 to keep people safe, they suggest people stay inside the home if there is lightning in the area. Officials said if you believe your home was struck by lightning to call 911 immediately. They continued with sharing time is the biggest enemy. The sooner they are notified about the situation the faster they can respond.
At this time there are no reports of anyone getting hurt from those lightning strikes.
