Orange Mound family seeking justice for father of 8 killed at convenience store helping someone change a tire

A family is asking for the public's help to find a suspect after a man was shot and killed at an Orange Mound convenience store.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An Orange Mound family is urgently seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the person responsible for the untimely death of Calvin Hicks Jr.

The victim, a devoted father of eight, was fatally shot earlier this week while assisting someone with a tire change at a convenience store

The family of Hicks exclusively spoke with ABC24 who are pleading for answers and justice.

Hicks' children range from 21 to 5 years old. Throughout the Orange Mound community, he was known for always willing to lend a helping hand. His sister, Cvelyn Love, said those actions continued until his last breath.

"He died helping somebody change their tire," she said. "He was helping the guy change his tire."

Hicks was shot and killed at a Save-A-Stop convenience stop the night of July 1. Love said he was doing what he was known for at the time of his death, helping others. She said her brother was not known to have any enemies.

"He was at the wrong place at the wrong time, so he had nothing to do with that was going on between the owners of the time and whoever did that," Love said.

Love told ABC24 one of the last good deeds her brother committed his life to was building a home for a veteran. As an advocate for homeless veterans, she said this was a project close to her heart. Love said the home is called House of Valor, which means courage. She said once the home is complete near the end of this year, they will dedicate the house in memory of her brother.

"It's going to be fully furnished, and the only thing the vets have to do is bring themselves and some clothes," she said. "If they don't have no clothes, we're going to provide that for them."

Hicks' son, 15-year-old Calvin Hicks III, said he was with his father before he went to the convenience store. Calvin said despite his father being a stubborn man, he misses him a lot.

"He'll give you like life changing advice but wouldn't change for himself," Calvin said.

An official with the Memphis Police Department told ABC24 at this time no arrests have been made in this case.

Calvin said whoever is responsible for killing his father will be served justice.

"Karma always comes back around," Calvin said. "You get what you put into this world honestly."

The family of Calvin Hicks Jr. have set up a GoFundme page to help the children and assist with funeral arrangements. Click here to view the link
