MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police said a woman was seriously injured, and two others hurt, after an overnight shooting in South Memphis.
MPD officers responded to the shooting just after midnight Thursday, May 16, 2024, in the 1100 block of Race Street. A woman was found shot lying near a car, and she was taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.
Investigators said a witness told them his girlfriend had called and told him someone was shooting near his home. He said he was a security guard at the College Park Apartments, and came home to check on everyone. He told police all seemed okay and was headed back to his post when he saw the woman shot on the ground.
MPD said investigators found nearly 60 spent rifle and handgun shells scattered around the vehicle next to the victim.
A witness told officers he heard 15 to 20 shots in the parking lot, then heard two or three vehicles take off from the scene.
At Regional One Hospital, MPD said they located a possible second person shot in the thigh. MPD said the man could not tell him when or where he was shot, but that he lived at the same address as a third person who was also shot.
MPD said officers located that third man in the ER. They said he told them he was asleep in the back of the car when he awoke to gunfire. He said he was shot in the knee while trying to get out of the car. Investigators said he ran to an apartment complex for safety then was taken to the hospital by private vehicle.
Investigators said security video showed the two men at the hospital being dropped off by a black Dodge Charger and a red Dodge Durango.
MPD said the area was checked for other victims or damage but none was found.
