Campbell Clinic identifies physician killed in "targeted" shooting in Collierville

In a statement, Campbell Clinic confirmed that they will close all of their locations on July 12 until further notice.

COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. — A physician is dead, and one person is in police custody Tuesday after a shooting at a Campbell Clinic in Collierville, according to Collierville Police.

The shooting took place Tuesday just after 2:30 p.m. at the Campbell Clinic on Poplar Avenue and Shea Road, CPD said.

Campbell Clinic confirmed in a statement Tuesday evening the victim was Dr. Ben Mauck, whom they described as a "highly respected and beloved physician."

"We ask that you please lift his family in prayer," the clinic said in the statement.

According to police, the shooting was not a random act, but was targeted, with a person shooting and killing the healthcare worker in an exam room.

CPD said the scene is secure and there is no threat to the public, but is urging everyone to remain clear of the area for now.

The incident is still under investigation, but a viewer told ABC24 someone walked into the clinic and shot Dr. Mauck.

In a statement, Campbell Clinic confirmed that they will close all Campbell Clinic locations tomorrow, July 12 and will "communicate the reopening of all facilities at a later time."

"We appreciate our local law enforcement officers who responded within minutes. We will continue to work closely with authorities as this remains an active investigation," the statement said.

Tennessee Senate minority leader Sen. Raumesh Akbari addressed the shooting on Tuesday with the following statement:

“For a decade, Republicans have been loosening Tennessee’s gun laws and making our community more dangerous. Tragedies like this underscore the urgent need for common sense – like reinstating background checks and gun licenses and establishing new reforms like an order of protection so police can remove firearms from a person who is threatening others. Whether you’re at school, a grocery store or on the job, you deserve to live and work free from gun violence.”

Dr. Trey Eubanks, Interim President and Surgeon-in-Chief at Le Bonheur, also provided a statement regarding the shooting.

"We were shocked to learn that Campbell Clinic and Le Bonheur surgeon Ben Mauck tragically was killed today at his clinic in Collierville," Dr. Eubanks said. "Ben was a friend to so many of us – a respected member of our Le Bonheur family, a beloved colleague and a dedicated physician to so many patients."

The clinic said they are asking for "prayers for the entire Campbell Clinic family, as well as for the privacy of Dr. Mauck’s family."
