MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police said a shooting late Wednesday night in Frayser left one person injured and several vehicles and homes damaged.
MPD officers responded to the shooting around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2024, in the 3500 block of Steele St. after a woman called and said her car had been hit by gunfire while she was parked at her friend's. When they got there, officers said they found several spent shell casings in the street at the entrance of the Corning Village Apartments at Briercrest Lane and Steele St.
According to the police report, investigators then got a call that a man had shown up at Regional One Hospital shot in the thigh. He was listed as non-critical. Police said the man told them he was standing in a cove by his car in a dark area when he heard gunfire, and that's when he noticed he was struck. MPD said the man did not know where he was but never said he was at the apartment complex at the time.
The police report said at least four others reported hearing gunfire then finding their vehicles struck by bullets. A fifth person told MPD she was in her living room at the complex when she heard several shots and dropped to the floor. She told investigators she got up and found bullets had hit her window and kitchen wall. Police said another home had been struck on the outside.
Investigators said no one they spoke with saw who actually fired the bullets and they do not currently have a description of the suspect(s) in the shooting.
MPD said one person was taken into custody at the scene - a security officer for the apartment complex whom, according to the report, was cited with disorderly conduct and failing to provide officers with a security license.
