MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A five-year-old boy is dead, and four people are in police custody, after Memphis Police said he got ahold of a gun and accidently shot himself Friday morning.
Memphis Police said they responded to the shooting at the 1300 block of Walnut Hall Court in East Memphis around 4:35 a.m. Friday.
There, they found the five-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wounds, and took him to LeBonheur Children's Hospital in critical condition, where he later died. Memphis Police said four people were detained on the scene.
Initial information shows the boy accidentally shot himself when he got ahold of the gun, according to Memphis Police, who also reminded Memphians they can pick up free gun locks at any police precinct to secure their firearms.
The investigation is ongoing.
