MEMPHIS, Tenn. — CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County has announced an extra $4,000 reward is being offered in an August 2023 hit-and-run crash that left three people dead. That makes a total of $8,000 offered for information leading to charges.

The crash happened just before 1 a.m. Aug. 3, 2023, at the intersection of Early Maxwell and Southern Ave. near Liberty Park, where a week-long motorcycle rally was being held at the time. Memphis Police said a Chrysler 300 crashed into two golf carts, and the carts caught on fire.

Three men – identified by CrimeStoppers as Tommy Roper, Adam Hawkins, and James Stokes - died at the scene, and another man was injured.

CrimeStoppers officials said the golf carts had been carrying fuel for a generator at the time. They said the Chrysler had been stolen, and four suspects walked away from the crash eastbound, but a security guard was able to snap a photo.

CrimeStoppers said the extra reward money was provided by the family of Cooper Thomez, a student who was riding a bicycle when he was struck and injured at East Parkway and Sam Cooper Blvd. last year.

“Detectives haven’t been able to solve his case,” said father Curtis Thomez. “We want to put the money we offered in that case to another hit-and-run event in the hope of helping other families get justice.”
