MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two men driving a stolen sedan crashed into a guardrail on I-55 while trying to avoid police early Monday morning, leading to traffic delays and injuries, investigators said.

Officers with the Memphis Police Department tried to conduct a traffic stop on a gray sedan with no lights Sept. 9  just after 4 a.m. at South Third Street and Peebles Road, but the driver refused to stop and recklessly drove north on South Third Street. Officers then sent out a broadcast about the sedan.

Police soon found the car, which continued to drive recklessly and crashed into a guardrail at South Third Street and I-55 south, breaking the railing.

Officers captured two men. First responders took the 21-year-old driver to a hospital in non-critical condition. The sedan's passenger, 31 years old, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Investigators discovered the car had been stolen and found drugs and two weapons inside.

No charges have been filed as of yet. An investigation is still underway. As of 11:30 a.m., road crews were still working on repairing the railing.
