MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police are investigating after $50,000 worth of copper was stolen from Beale Street Landing. This comes just days after it was learned Memphis River Parks Partnership was scammed out of nearly $400,000.
MPD said officers responded to the theft call just after 11 a.m. Monday, July 29, 2024, in the 200 block of Riverside Dr. at Beale Street Landing.
According to the police report, the Director of Riverfront Properties told investigators someone had stolen copper from inside the control room on the boating dock. He said it appeared the thief gained access from the ceiling hatch.
The report said the director had noticed some hand tools near the ceiling hatch two days before while walking on the dock. A fisherman near the scene told investigators that during the day on July 24, he saw a man lying on the boating dock. The report did not conclude whether the man the fisherman saw was related to the theft.
In a statement, Memphis River Parks Partnership said, "We filed the police report about this audacious crime and are working with Memphis Police Department as its investigation continues. Investigators have several promising leads and we expect more to be announced in the coming days."
