The search is on for a convicted killer who is on the run from the East Arkansas Regional Corrections Center in Brickeys, which is about 45 miles southwest of Memphis.

Calvin Adams has been missing since 4:30 Monday morning. Corrections officials don’t know if he is still inside the prison or if he has escaped beyond its walls. There were two searches going on. One inside the prison and one outside because they don’t know where he is.

“If he has touched that fence it would have been over for him because it’s not on stun. If you touch it, you are not going to breathe any more, said Dina Tyler, Arkansas Department of Corrections spokesperson.

Tyler said Adams had tried to escape by way of the large fence that surrounds the prison he likely wouldn’t have survived.

So what happened? The 49-year-old was discovered missing around 4:30 Monday morning during roll call. He was last seen around midnight.

“We did see him on surveillance footage leaving the barracks about 12:15 heading towards the boiler room, but from there we don’t know what happened,” said Tyler.

Corrections spent the day searching inside the prison. Law enforcement searched the outside.

Adams is serving a life without parole sentence for kidnapping and killing a Greene County man in 1995.

This is not the first time he has tried to escape. In 2009 he escaped from another Arkansas prison and was captured several days later in New York.

In that case, Adams was at a different Arkansas prison that had a garment shop. It made corrections uniforms. Adams and another inmate got ahold of the uniforms, put them on, and in 2009 walked out the front door of the prison during shift change.
