MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police are investigating after a man was shot overnight in Downtown Memphis along South Main St. while in a car with his family.
MPD said officers learned of the shooting after the victim was taken to Regional One Hospital in a private vehicle.
The victim’s mother told investigators just before midnight on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, she was driving with her son and two granddaughters in her vehicle when she pulled to the gate at the Chisca Apartments on South Main. She told police that as she began putting in a gate code, a white sedan pulled up beside them and began shooting at her car.
The woman told police she saw three suspects with long guns, and during the shooting her son was struck, so she took him to Regional One Hospital. Police said he was shot in the lower back and was critical but stable at the hospital.
The mother told police she left her son at the hospital and took her granddaughters to her other son’s home. Police said the two children were not hurt.
Investigators said the victim told them that he thinks his family was caught in the crossfire.
Police said it took a while, but they eventually found shell casings at the Chisca Apartments, and they found eight to 10 bullet holes in the back of the victim’s car.
