MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A former Dyer County Correctional employee is out on bond after being accused of smuggling drugs into the jail.
Tyrell Wallace, 40, faces several charges, including bringing contraband into a penal facility, and possession of a gun and drugs, including meth, crack cocaine, marijuana, suboxone, and “enough fentanyl pills to kill a few hundred people,” according to the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office.
Wallace was fired and taken into custody. He was released on a $100,000 bond.
Sheriff Jeff Box said the charges follow an internal investigation by the Dyer County Criminal Investigation Division.
“We condemn the actions of Wallace and we hold our correction officers to the highest professional standards,” said Sheriff Box. “They are an important part of our criminal justice system by keeping violent offenders off the streets. My jail staff does a great job every day and we will not have criminals disguised as correction officers.”
Box continued, “Our Criminal Investigative Division will continue to investigate similar reports of this type of activity and our leadership team will continue to evaluate all safeguards and security measures to eliminate the flow of contraband into the correctional facility.”
