MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The City of Memphis is encouraging residents to get free smoke detectors to keep them safe from potential fires.
City code requires residential properties to have installed and maintained smoke alarms in workable condition. You are eligible for a free one if you live in the city, own the property, do not have a working smoke alarm and cannot afford to buy your own.
People can also quality if they are older than 59 or have at least one child under the age of 18.
An appointment will be scheduled for those who qualify, and Memphis firefighters will arrive in a fire department vehicle and in uniform to install the alarm.
