High School student tased, arrested after assaulting teacher, threatening to shoot officers, Covington Police say

Covington Police said the 14-year-old student became angry during a parent-teacher meeting, and hit the teacher while his mother was trying to get him under control.

COVINGTON, Tenn. — A 14-year-old Covington High School student will face juvenile court after Covington Police said they had to use a taser to get him under control when he assaulted a teacher following a parent-teacher meeting.

Covington Police said the incident, which happened Wednesday around 11:30 a.m., started when the student became upset during an administrative hearing at Covington High School with his mother.

The student left the room to go into the hallways of the school, becoming belligerent with his mother, school staff, and school resource officers who were trying to calm him down. Covington Police said he escalated his behavior, cursing and making threats.

That's when Covington Police said the student then assaulted a teacher who was helping his mother in trying to calm him down. He then threatened to repeatedly shoot officers with a handgun and an assault rifle, although later surveillance video showed there was no weapon on his person, or on school property.

The school resource officer then tased the student, Covington Police said, bringing him under control and arresting him. He received a juvenile court summons for disorderly conduct, assault, assault of a police officer, resisting arrest and threat of mass violence on school property.

He's been banned from being on school property until the matter is finalized in court, Covington Police said.

The teacher was treated on scene for injuries to the arm and elbow, and later referred to a medical facility for additional treatment.

“This was a volatile incident that could have easily ended with more injuries to those involved if our SRO had not intervened,” said Covington Police Chief Donna Turner. "We are continuing to monitor the teacher who was injured and pray for his total recovery. I am thankful the student was quickly detained, and the school activities returned to normal."
