Inmate gets hit by a car as he tries to escape custody, says Shelby County Sheriff's Office

Elijah Jenkins escaped a custody van as he was being transported to the corrections center, on Wednesday afternoon, but is now back in custody.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Shelby County inmate almost escaped custody while he was being transported back to the Shelby County Corrections Center (SCCC) on Thursday afternoon, according to the Sheriffs Office.

The 27-year-old inmate, Elijah Jenkins, was on on a van in the area of I-40 and Danny Thomas, going back to SCCC around 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, when he broke out a window of the van. About 20 minutes later, deputies found Jenkins on the roadway of I-40 between Jackson Ave. and Faxon Ave.

Deputies say, between Jenkins escaping and deputing finding him, he was hit by a car.

Memphis Police and Memphis Fire both responded to the incident, with Memphis Fire then taking Jenkins to the hospital.

The Sheriffs Office says the person who hit Jenkins left the scene, and that the investigation is ongoing.
