MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A now-former FedEx driver in Louisiana is now charged with DWI and more after crashing into a home Tuesday afternoon, according to police.
The Houma Police Department said they responded to the crash about 4:15 p.m. March 26, 2024. They arrived to find a delivery truck for the Memphis-based global shipping giant had left the road and smashed into the front of a home. Investigators said people were in the home at the time but no one was injured.
Houma police said the FedEx driver, identified as Michael Smith, 31, failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody. They said he refused to cooperate with officers at the scene, and refused a breath test to determine his level of intoxication. They said he was taken to a medical facility for a blood draw.
Investigators said they found Smith with an open alcoholic drink, marijuana, and Tramadol, which is a schedule IV narcotic.
Houma Police said Smith was charged with DWI 1st, possession of marijuana, possession of alcoholic beverages in a motor vehicle, possession of schedule IV narcotic, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, and resisting an officer.
FedEx told ABC24 in a statement: “Safety is our top priority, and we are grateful no one was injured. This is intolerable behavior, and the driver is no longer providing service on behalf of FedEx. We are cooperating with authorities, and any questions should be directed to local law enforcement.”
