MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Shelby County Grand Jury has indicted a man on charges after Memphis Police said he was caught on camera slamming his pickup into a food truck in Cordova, injuring himself and at least two people.
Alton Turner was indicted on two counts each of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated assault. He was released on his own recognizance on May 31, according to court records.
Memphis Police said officers responded to the scene about 7:20 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2024, in the 8500 block of Macon Rd. According to the police affidavit, Turner had been drinking at a nearby bar and walked back and forth between there and a food truck.
One of the victims told investigators that Turner got cut off at the bar and started causing a disturbance at the food truck. They said after several tires to get Turner to just leave, he threatened to kill the victim, according to MPD.
The affidavit said that’s when Turner went to his Ford F250 truck in the bar parking lot, then drove it through a fence at the victim. The MPD affidavit said Turner drove up onto a small platform in front of the truck then hit the truck itself, getting stuck.
Investigators said video showed the whole incident, and even while stuck, showed Turner continuing to try to speed toward the victim, with smoke coming from the tires. Investigators said the video showed Turner then seem to target another person next to the first victim before being taken into custody.
According to the affidavit, the two victims were treated for minor injuries at the scene. Turner was taken to the hospital for injuries in the crash before being booked into jail.
