Man arrested for animal cruelty after several dogs found dead in Lafayette County

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Lafayette County, Mississippi, man has been arrested after the county sheriff’s office found 10 animals dead and 20 animals malnourished at a home on Sunday.

The sheriff’s office said they responded to an area on County Road 418 on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2024, for a possible animal cruelty situation.

They said deputies saw several dogs who appeared malnourished along with several others who were dead and still attached to their collars and chains.

The sheriff's office said investigators were called, and they issued a search warrant. During a search of the property, 20 dogs were rescued and taken to a veterinarian, while 10 other dogs were found dead, according to officials.

Terry E. Pegues, 47, was arrested for 10 counts of animal cruelty on Wednesday, Aug. 7, according to the sheriff's office.

Officials said Pegues was given a $75,000 bond by the Lafayette County Justice Court.
