Man arrested for sexual assault and attempted rape at Cossitt Library, according to MPD

Police arrested a man for inappropriately touching a woman in the bathroom.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police arrested a man for sexually assaulting a woman in a Cossitt Library bathroom on Monday.

According to MPD, 35-year-old Kevin Standberry walked into the bathroom while the woman was inside and starting touching her without permission.

The woman broke free and ran out of the bathroom to go to another part of the library.

Police then say the woman went back into the bathroom to get her belongings when Standberry came back in and continued to inappropriately touch her before she broke free again.

Cossitt Library security saw Standberry come out of the bathroom, detained him and called MPD.

"We are grateful for the response of the security officer who detained the suspect and the Memphis Police Department for their quick action," said Keenon McCloy, Memphis Public Library Director. "Memphis Public Libraries currently utilizes security guards at all of our branches and have a plan to enhance security at all locations. We are committed to creating a safe and welcoming environment for customers."
