Man charged after 9-hour armed standoff with police in Dyersburg

DYERSBURG, Tenn. — A man is facing a charge after waving a gun and refusing to obey police, resulting in a 9-hour standoff in Dyersburg on Tuesday. 

The Dyersburg Police Department responded to a call Nov. 21 regarding a man waving a gun around. 

Arriving around 4:15 p.m., officers found a man, 44-year-old James Yants, on a shed’s roof armed with a handgun. 

Police said he refused to cooperate with the officers, resulting in a 9-hour negotiation. 

Yants fired his gun into the air around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday before surrendering, according to police. 

He was taken into custody and charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.
