59-year-old Ricky Hunter was convicted of second-degree murder and convicted felon in possession of a handgun. He will be sentenced November 19, 2021.
The shooting happened about 11:30 p.m. on July 3, 2018 at Brenda’s Rhythm & Blues Club. That’s on Walker Avenue near South Bellevue Boulevard.
Witnesses said Hunter got into a fight with 48-year-old Carolyn Thomas and punched her in the face, knocking her down. They said she got up and threw a beer bottle at him and missed. Prosecutors said that’s when Hunter pulled out a handgun and shot Thomas in the shoulder.
At that point, prosecutors said Hunter stood over Thomas and pulled the trigger again, but the gun didn’t fire. Witnesses said he then left, laughing as he walked out.
Thomas was taken to the hospital but died several hours later from her injuries.
Prosecutors said Hunter was on the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry, convicted in 1998 in Florida of sexual battery with a deadly weapon involving a family member.
