SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — A man is in critical condition after he fought with deputies during a traffic stop and then crashed into a pole Monday in north Shelby County, the sheriff's office said.
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) said deputies pulled over a car just after midnight on April 29, 2024, at Bishop Hills Drive and Shadow Bark Cove. There, a fight broke out between the deputies and the driver, who managed to get back in his car and drive off.
Less than a minute later, the suspect crashed into a utility pole and then into a ditch on Egypt Central Road near Grand Pyramid Drive, SCSO said.
The suspect was detained and taken to Regional One Health in critical condition. According to authorities, no deputies were injured.
As of 7 a.m. Monday, SCSO said the road is still closed in the area and drivers should use Bolen Huse Road as an alternative route.
The investigation is ongoing.
