Man indicted for murder, accused of stabbing someone multiple times over missing car

23-year-old Stephen Robinson is in jail after stabbing a man multiple times in Orange Mound Saturday, April 16, 2022.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Shelby County Grand Jury indicted a man on a charge of first degree murder, after police said he stabbed someone to death in Orange Mound over a missing car.

The Shelby County District Attorney General said 24-year-old Stephen Robinson is being held without bond in the Shelby County Jail, charged in the death of 45-year-old Detrick Hammer.

According to the Memphis Police Department, around 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2022, officers responded to the 700 block of Hamilton. They found Hammer leaned up against a wall with several stab wounds, and he died at the scene.

Prosecutors said officers found Robinson a short time later covered in blood at his home in the 2300 block of Boyle Ave., about a mile south of the attack.

According to prosecutors, before Robinson had walked to Hammer's home on Hamilton, he stopped at an AutoZone and bought two knives. They said he told them went to Hammer's home and started stabbing Hammer, chasing him around the home.

Investigators found the two knives on Robinson covered in blood, and said they matched them to surveillance footage showing Robinson buying the knives and gloves an hour before the murder.

According to a police affidavit, Robinson admitted to the stabbing and told investigators his car had gone missing, and he knew who took it, which is why he killed the man. They said Robinson told them he cut himself on his hands and thigh while stabbing Hammer for stealing his car.

Investigators said Robinson's car was not recovered.
