MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police Department officials say a man struck an MLGW-owned light pole on Summer Avenue and Perkins Road while trying to follow a car that had robbed him at 11:56 a.m. Thursday.

The victim had gone to a KFC restaurant at 4306 Summer Ave. and ordered food, paying in cash from an envelope he had containing $5,000.

After getting his order, the victim went to a First Horizon Bank across the parking lot and when he left the bank, two unknown older Black males who were behind him in line at KFC approached him in the parking lot, implying they had a weapon in their waist band, according to MPD's report.

"The suspects then went into the victim vehicle and took the envelope of cash," the report reads. "The suspects fled the scene in a newer gray or green minivan traveling west on Summer Ave. The victim then tried to follow the suspect, eventually losing control of his van and sticking a light pole on Summer Ave just east of Perkins."

The report states that KFC video cameras may have captured it but a manager could only run the security camera system and was out for the day. Real Time Crime Center cameras also captured the suspected vehicle, a green neon mini-van, and the crash from the victim. No injuries were reported.

MPD officials said the investigation is ongoing.
