MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County District Attorney General’s Office announced a man convicted of sexual battery of a 6-year-old will spend 25 years in prison.

The D.A. said Phillip Cavitt, 32, was convicted in October 2023 of aggravated sexual battery. Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2024, he was sentenced to 20 years on that charge, the maximum allowed according to the D.A. He was also found in violation of probation on a previous conviction, and his 5-year probation term was revoked.

The D.A. said the sentence and probation violation will be served consecutively, which means 25 years behind bars.

Prosecutors said incidents happened to the child when the mother was incarcerated, and the child disclosed them to the mother when she was released. “But, according to the victim, the mother purportedly ignored these claims,” said the D.A.

The D.A.’s office said due to Cavitt’s prior criminal history, he is categorized as a Range 2 Multiple Offender. They said he also faces another pending indictment for allegedly sexually assaulting another woman.
