MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A SHelby County Grand Jury is set to take up the case against an 18-year-old who, along with a 13-year-old, is facing charges after a man died in an early morning shooting near Memphis International Airport on Tuesday, July 2.
Vontavious Muirhead, 18, is charged with first degree murder in the perpetration of an aggravated robbery, aggravated robbery (2X) and theft of property to wit: $10,000-$60,000. He is being held in the Shelby County Jail with a $1,000,000 bond in the murder case.
Court records show another robbery case against Muirhead was dismissed Aug. 13 due to "lack of prosecution." Court records also show Muirhead was granted diversion and probation just weeks before the deadly crime spree. He was found guilty of violating probation in the diversion case on Sept. 20, 2024.
The 13-year-old boy was charged with first degree murder in the perpetration of an aggravated robbery, aggravated robbery (2X) and theft of property to wit: $10,000-$60,000.
Memphis Police said their officers responded to a shooting at American Way and Lamar Avenue just before 4:30 a.m., where a man was found with gunshot wounds and pronounced dead on the scene.
Memphis Police said early information showed the suspect vehicle was a dark colored SUV.
Police said later arrested Muirhead and the 13-year-old Thursday, July 4, in relation to the shooting after officers found a stolen vehicle in the 3900 block of Bishop Bridge around 4:30 p.m. They tracked the vehicle with aviation, and the suspects ran away on foot when officers tried to arrest them, with the suspect in the passenger seat throwing away a handgun. Officers then caught them.
Police said both were involved in multiple other crimes that occurred the same day as the deadly shooting.
Around 4:30 a.m. on July 2, officers responded to an auto theft in the 3200 block of Woodlake Circle and were told that someone's 2018 Kia Sorento was stolen from the parking lot about a couple hours earlier.
Just before 5:30 a.m., MPD responded to a robbery at 4225 Winchester Road at the Exxon Gas Station, where officers were told that the victims were approached by three armed suspects in all-black clothing. The suspects took several items from the victims and drove away in a red Kia Sorento.
Officers later responded to another robbery in the 5900 block of Wind Meadow Lane just before midnight, in which Officers were told two armed suspects stole several items from the victims and drove away in the same Sorento.
They later found the car and two of the suspects on July 4.
