MEMPHIS, Tenn — A man is in custody after threatening to shoot up two Memphis schools Thursday. Authorities then charged him with murder for a separate incident, police said.

Charles Davis, 21, is facing charges of first-degree murder during a perpetration of a robbery, harassment, two counts of threats of mass violence on school property, unlawful possession of a weapon, and evading arrest. He is currently in the Shelby County Jail with a total of $2,000,000 bond.

Officers with the Memphis Police Department responded to an intimidation call around 12:45 p.m. at John P Freeman Optional School. Shelby County education board officials had told police that an employee received threats from the father of of her child, Davis.

The man threatened to shoot up the school where the employee's child attended and Oakshire Elementary, police were told.

Police searched both schools, but did not find Davis. Officers stayed to ensure students' safety during dismissal.

Investigators later found Davis with a black bag in the area of Third Street and Horn Lake Road, where he ran and a chase occurred before police caught him in the 4000 block of Trevathan Circle without the bag. After a search, police found the bag, which contained a handgun.

Police said they also discovered he was responsible for a homicide that happened May 16, 2024, in the area of Hillridge Street and Winchester Road.
