MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County District Attorney General’s Office announced Wednesday that a hotel on American Way has been closed as a public nuisance.
The D.A.’s office said the Memphis Extended Stay at 4300 American Way was shut down Oct. 23, 2024, after an investigation by Memphis Police showed nearly 800 disturbance calls over a two-year period.
According to the D.A.’s office, between Aug. 13, 2022, and Sept. 3, 2024, MPD responded to at least three homicides, three DOA (death on arrival) calls, 11 overdoses, and several reports of armed robberies and aggravated assaults at the hotel.
The D.A. said CrimeStoppers tips in August 2024 led police to investigate drug sales taking place in several room, alleging that some employees may have been involved.
Shelby County D.A. Steve Mulroy said several arrests were made during the closure, and “a significant quantity of drugs was confiscated.”
On Friday, Memphis Police said they made six warrant arrests and detained several people as part of the investigation. Investigators said they seized seven handguns, two of which were reported stolen, and one rifle.
“This closure sends a clear message that we will not tolerate properties that harbor criminal activity and threaten the safety of our community,” said Mulroy in a statement. “We are committed to working alongside law enforcement to ensure that dangerous establishments are held accountable.”
