MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Shelby County jury convicted a Memphis man in a 2022 shooting that killed his ex-girlfriend.

Travis Cohens was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Teonka Gunn and the attempted murder of her cousin. He was also convicted on charges of reckless endangerment and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

Memphis Police said officers responding to a shooting about 4 p.m. March 1, 2022, at the Saint Court Apartments on North Watkins found Gunn shot several times outside her apartment. She died at the scene.

Gunn’s family said she had just been dropped off by her cousin when Cohens fired at the vehicle, then chased Gunn and shot her again.

According to the police affidavit, the cousin said his minor son was also in the car when Cohens fired at them. The affidavit said a witness told investigators he saw Cohens stand over Gunn and shoot her several times.

The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office said 14 witnesses testified for the prosecution at Cohens' trial.

“This heartbreaking loss is another stark reminder of the toll domestic violence takes on our community,” Shelby County D.A. Steve Mulroy said in a statement. “While no verdict can restore the life lost, we hope this outcome brings some measure of peace to Ms. Gunn’s family and sends a strong message that we will tirelessly pursue justice for victims.”

Court records show a sentencing date has not been set.
