MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Mayor Paul Young was nearly assaulted at the restaurant Folk's Folly in East Memphis in March.
According to Memphis officials, the night of March 25, 2024, the mayor was leaving the restaurant when a man named James Banks grabbed the mayor and tried to force his way into Mayor Young's car. Security detail prevented the man from getting in the car while the mayor was taken from the scene.
Memphis Police responded to a call of disorderly conduct and when they arrived, they found Banks intoxicated and refusing to leave the property. According to the affidavit, Banks was also refusing to drive away because of his intoxication.
MPD said Banks was yelling and refusing to follow the officer's orders, after which he was taken into custody and his car was towed.
He was charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication, both misdemeanors. The charges were sent to the grand jury on Sept. 4, and Banks remains out of jail on $1,500 bond.
