MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Mayor Paul Young says the city’s immediate plan for crime involves what he calls “suppression,” labeling the strategy as the "5Cs."
“No matter what community I go to, the conversation is often around public safety," Young said during his One Memphis Town Hall in Raleigh Tuesday, May 28.
The mayor disclosed his approach to maintaining and increasing public safety.
“These criminals have gotten emboldened. They’re emboldened and brazen in their actions," Memphis resident Gwen Sutton said. "We got to be just as emboldened and brazen in our actions.”
The five Cs:
- Criminal activity disruption: where authorities target repeat offenders.
- Curfew: The mayor says the city is working to identify community partners to transfer custody of young people, once apprehended, to better enforce the curfew already on the books.
- Cameras: increasing the investment in cameras and technology.
- Code Zero: where MPD increases collaborations with other law enforcement agencies, targeting certain high crime precincts, increasing traffic stops and the execution of warrants.
- Controlling the highways: enforcing speed limits on highways more forcefully
“I’m all for the five Cs, but this is beyond those five Cs," Sutton said. "We’ve got to look at the state resources, national resources, international resources, because we are in a crisis situation.”
