MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis mother is closer in her search for justice.
Her son, a former Memphis Shelby County Schools secretary, Larry Thorn, was found dead from a gunshot wound January 2023.
Thorn's mother, Lavonda Henderson spoke with ABC24 about the latest developments in her son's case.
"I am actually glad he's able to rest in peace a little bit better now that we found at least one suspect," Henderson said.
Henderson said after waiting nearly two years, a suspect in her son's murder has been arrested. She said this is the first sign of good news for her family since his death.
"It's just been somewhat of a relief so just to be able to get one night of good sleep, you know I'm ok with that. I just wanted to know who, so I'm kind of satisfied with that," she said.
Thorn was a 27-year-old secretary at A. Maceo Walker Middle School. In January 2023, he was found dead from a gunshot wound behind a church on the 1400 Block of Gold Avenue in South Memphis.
Henderson said it's still unclear why anyone would want to harm her child.
"With how the world is going today, it's just hard to be able to ask why. I mean I feel like God makes no mistakes," Henderson said.
According to Henderson, a detective from the Memphis Police Department said a suspect has been arrested in this case.
That suspect is a minor. They told Henderson that individual will be facing charges of second-degree murder and abuse of a corpse.
Henderson told ABC24, while she waits for that individual to be convicted in court, she would like to help other grieving mothers who are seeking justice for their loved one.
"Hopefully I'll be able to give hope to other moms that may be in the same situation or other family members that may be in the same situation," Henderson said.
Henderson said there could be more suspects to come in this case.
