Memphis Police dispatch told ABC24 the shooting happened on the corner of Carnes Avenue and Grand Street shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday, April 20, 2024. Memphis Police said the shooting happened at a block party held without a permit at Orange Mound Park, and as many as 300 people were in attendance.
On Sunday, most of the victims had been upgraded to stable condition, police said. One victim was released from the hospital, according to MPD.
Originally, Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis said Saturday night that there was a total of 16 victims, but MPD later issued a correction saying nine people were shot. They said the error likely happened because several victims were reported multiple times.
