MPD: Man charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun after deadly shooting on Frayser Drive

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man has been charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun after a deadly shooting took place in the 600 block of Frayser, according to Memphis Police. 

Jamal Johnson, 28, also had a warrant out for aggravated assault, according to Memphis Police.

Memphis Police Department (MPD) officers said they responded shortly after midnight toward the start of Sunday, March 3. They said they found one victim who was dead on the scene.

Another man was injured on the scene and received treatment there, according to MPD.

This is an ongoing investigation, according to MPD.

According to an affidavit from the Shelby County Sheriff's Office, Johnson stated that he had a verbal argument with his girlfriend at their residence. He told police that he told her to leave when allegedly she said "make me leave," according to the affidavit. 

He said that he physically pushed her out of the residence into the front yard and turned to go back inside when he heard one shot fired, according to the affidavit. He stated that he saw his girlfriend with a black and silver handgun, according to the affidavit.

He said that she pulled the trigger several times but the handgun didn't fire, according to the affidavit. He then told police that he fired his Ruger 9mm and struck the woman multiple times, according to the affidavit. 

Officers found this gun on the scene later, according to the affidavit, and Johnson admitted that it was his gun. Officers gave Johnson his Miranda rights and he gave a confession to shooting the woman, according to the affidavit. 

Johnson was found to be convicted of an aggravated assault that took place in 2018, according to the affidavit.
